Recruiting the best candidates for any vacancy is a very important task and requires utmost attention. Even though you only crave such a candidate when the position he/she is ideal for is vacant, sourcing candidates is not a one-and-done thing. It requires your unwavering efforts.
Active candidates, those we usually find on job portals, are easy to source, and are more likely to apply for roles too, but what about those passive candidates who are happy where they currently work.
The perfect candidate is often already happy at his/her current place of work and doesn’t fill out applications or respond to recruiter outreach. Sourcing such people referred to as passive candidates, comes with its own set of challenges.
But pursuing such candidates is worth the extra effort. Research shows that passive candidates are 120% more likely to make a significant impact at their new job. And that is why you shouldn’t miss out on them without even trying.
But here’s the thing about sourcing – You can’t just decide to start doing it when there’s a requirement.
Sourcing isn’t like the game of cross & zero – it’s not a short match where you can just get in and out. It’s more like the game of carrom, you have to skillfully place the candidates at correct positions over time, such that you can score when a demand presents itself.
You need to work on your talent pipeline. Consistent unyielding work.
This is why it’s healthy to focus more on a specific industry or a specialty area. Getting on a candidate’s radar often requires a consistent multi-channel approach to arouse his/her interest. And when these passive candidates start reaching out to you, a ripple effect gets going. And slowly you become an expert in sourcing for such roles.
A great outcome of this effect is that you become famous among the people you’re trying to recruit.
Sourcing the same roles over and over again can become boring over time. But again, that is something you have to enjoy and embrace to succeed. On this note, I’d like to quote James Clear, the author of the terrific book, Atomic Habits:
“The greatest threat to success is not a failure but boredom”
This model of sourcing candidates with persistence comes with rewards too! Not only will you get a clearer idea about the roles and their requirements, but you’ll also become an expert in this area.
Being seen as an Expert is an intrinsic reward and will help you gain job satisfaction and bigger paychecks.
Who wouldn’t want that?
