3 things Recruiters need to stop doing

As we enter 2021, recovering from the nightmare that was 2020, we must start taking ‘what not to do’ seriously. All because we have to understand what needs improvement and what (if anything) needs to cease completely. And this applies to recruiters as well.
Everyone wants to perform better, to be a better professional, and to earn more. You can start by eliminating a few things that are actually causing you more harm than good.
You can view the vlog here.
Here are 3 things that we recommend recruiters to keep in mind from this year on.
- Rushing to fill that opening won’t do you any good.
Hiring optimism is growing in India and now, with the vaccines available, will more likely go higher. This might mean high volume recruiting needs and a good opportunity for you to excel, but such a situation may lure you into rushing through the process and making mistakes. You may be tempted to push hard to fill that vacancy and end up missing the mark completely.
Now is a great time to look back at your mistakes and stop rushing. You can slow down a bit, take your time to create a recruitment strategy, and try to connect with potential employees to find a good fit for the company/companies you’re hiring for.
- Posting the old job description would not give you the same result
Building on the first point, take a long, hard look at the job description, JD before you post it. Both JDs and titles have evolved over time. A JD that used to work for you in the past may not attract the right candidates anymore.
If you don’t think it through and end up posting a JD that doesn’t give a realistic preview of what you expect from the candidate, you may end up attracting the wrong people, and even worse, you may end up chasing away the good ones.
Good candidates don’t fall for generic descriptions anymore. You need to create an attractive JD and include the qualification and skills you’re looking for.
- Making that false assumption might cost you a lot
Recruiters make snap judgements about a candidate when they see the resume. They make an assumption when they see a common behavior, drawing on their past experiences to draw a pattern.
While every profession has a handful of beliefs, some of these need to be questioned every now and then, for a false assumption on the part of a recruiter may blow up a good candidate’s chance of getting hired even before meeting.
Assumptions are like encoded actions, they allow us to work quickly, but without a second thought. You should make it a habit to avoid making an assumption, good or bad, such as
- The candidate will accept a lower salary than what she expects.
- If I hire a good candidate, she’ll make a good impact from Day 1.
- Candidates will wait for the offer, even if it is delayed.
- People check their mail regularly.
- Resumes are a complete and accurate record of the candidate’s work experience.
